- INTRODUCTION
- You will not need to know all the rules of chess to be able to attempt this
- puzzle, but you will need to know the moves of a knight and how a pawn
- captures.
-
- The black pawns can capture any piece that is one square diagonally away
- from them and in front of them. In the diagrammed position they will be
- capturing down the board. Therefore they can capture(or control) the squares
- Southwest or Southeast of them. In the puzzle, these squares, as well as the
- squares the pawns occupy, are out of bounds to the white knight.
-
- The knight move is difficult to explain. It moves half way between moving 2
- squares in a straight line and moving 2 squares in a diagonal line. It moves
- in a kind of L-shape. Another way to describe it is that it moves one square
- straight and one diagonally. It can jump over intervening pieces are either
- colour. Anyway, attempting the puzzle is a good way to learn how the knight
- moves!
-
-
- THE KNIGHT AND FOUR PAWNS PUZZLE
- The object of this puzzle is to move the knight around the board, from the
- a1 square to the a8 square.
-
- The black pawns never move. The white knight is not allowed to capture any
- of the black pawns or move to a square where the knight can be captured by
- a pawn.
- It is important to remember that the pawns are coming down the board!
-
- If you attempt to do either of these, the Amiga will disallow your last move
- and give you an error message.
-
- The next destination square for the knight will be marked by a white 'X'.
- The knight will aim to get to all the squares in the bottom row, from left
- to right. it will then goto the squares in the second row in the reverse
- direction.
-
- Each time the row changes, the direction will be reversed.
- Of course, squares occuppied or controlled by black pawns are never
- destination squares.
-
- After having solved it, the object is to it as quickly as possible.
- You can take as many moves as you like to reach a destination square, but
- the squares must be done in order.
-
- TIPS
- On an open board it takes a knight 2 moves to reach a square, one square
- away diagonally or two squares away orthogonally, 3 moves to reach an
- adjacent square and 4 moves to reach a square, two squares away diagonally.
-
- In the puzzle, the presence of the black pawns will compound this.
- The shortest number of moves needed to reach the next target square is 2 and
- the most needed is 5.

- INSTRUCTIONS
- Before the puzzle starts you will be asked what level of difficulty you
- want. The number you choose is also the final row you will reach and can be
- anything between the first row and the last row.
-
- To move the knight, just click on the square you want to move it to with the
- left mouse button. If it is a valid move, the knight will move to that
- square!
